Stephen Leung Photography Blog bio picture
  • My name is Stephen and I'm a photographer based out of Southern California.  I used to have a separate website and blog, but decided to combine them together so that everything is in one place, so here we are!  This blog follows my personal and professional life, as well as some my latest photos

.

So a little about me: I was raised in Hong Kong and California and am currently living in the Los Angeles area with my wife and our new baby daughter.  Growing up, I always enjoyed drawing.  What started as doodles and sketches eventually led me getting into graphic design and photography.  I'm particularly fond of doing layouts and album design so, when shooting pictures, I always think about how the scene will look on a page.

Becoming a new parent has brought a lot of changes in my life, but also provided me with new perspective on God's creation and a new look for my photography.  Now that I have a baby, I'll be shooting family photography a little bit more, but wedding and portrait photography will always be my first love =)

That's it for now, thanks for stopping by and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by clicking on the contact link to send me a email.  Look forward to hearing from you!

Celebrate Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re like me, it’s tough figuring out what to get her. Instead of another card that will end up in a shoe box, or flowers that will be wilted by the end of the week, how about something she can proudly display on her wall?

So to help you with that Mother’s Day gift, I’m happy to announce a Mother’s Day session for you and your mom, or anyone else in the family! Best of all you’ll also receive an 8×10 art panel (see here for example) or a 16×20 canvas that she can proudly display on her wall. You DO want to remind her who’s her favorite child right? =)

Here are the session details:

- Session date is April 28 (to make sure your art panel or canvas will arrive by Mother’s Day)

- All sessions will take place at a Walnut park location (once you book, I’ll send you the details & directions)

- Sessions are 30 minutes long, plenty of time to get a few different looks for your family!

- You’ll get your choice of a 8×10 art panel or 16×20 canvas along with your session

- Digital negatives will be included

- Session fee is $150

If you would like to book a time slot, contact me via the CONTACT link above or email steve@macstudio.org titled MOTHER’S DAY SESSION.

Kevin and Sarah – Los Angeles Wedding

She waited patiently in her suite while her bridesmaid guarded the door.  Armed with a list of both physical and mental challenges, he was going to have to demonstrate the lengths he would go to to see his beautiful bride.  Kevin and Sarah were married last month in LA and I had the opportunity to photograph their wedding along with the talented Steven Nguyen.  The couple had a blend of both traditional and western traditions to their wedding day and it was great seeing how they blended the two together =)

We started the day at Hacienda Heights where the bridesmaids waited for the groomsmen to arrive.

Sarah waiting in her suite.

When the groomsmen arrived, the bridesmaids had a series of challenges that Kevin had to accomplish before he could see his bride.  The first was seeing if he could figure out how to Facetime her.

Another was testing to see if he carried a picture of her in his wallet.

As is customary in Chinese culture, the bride and groom had a tea ceremony to express their thanks and gratitude to their parents and immediate family.

After the tea ceremony, we headed downstairs for some pictures in the hotel lobby before heading off.

Stopping by Kevin’s uncle’s home for a tea ceremony for his side of the family.

The home had a Japanese style garden in the back which made for a wonderful backdrop for pictures =)

The gazebo in the backyard was amazing.  I totally want one in my backyard!

Next we headed to the ceremony which was held at the main sanctuary at EFCLA.

Getting some last minute details before walking down the aisle.

Pastor Liu praying for Kevin and Sarah before the ceremony starts.

After the ceremony we made a quick stop by Whittier Narrows Recreational Park before heading to the reception.

Showcasing some cute props made by their friends!

You gotta love their sense of humor =)

After Whittier Narrows, we headed to NBC Seafood Restaurant in Monterey Park for the reception.

Making their grand entrance.

Pastor Liu giving thanks for the food before dinner got underway.

An army of waiters brings in the first of many courses.

The bridal party came up with an assortment of games for the newly weds.  Among which was eating this grape necklace without making a mess.

Going around and greeting their family and friends.

Getting ready for the garter and bouquet toss.

There it goes!

Sarah thought the cake frosting would be better on Kevin’s forehead.  These two are so silly =)

The evening ended with Kevin serenading his new bride.  You can listen to his performance here.

Congratulations Kevin and Sarah!  Thanks for allowing me to be part of your special day!

Venue: EFCLA

Officiant: Livingston Liu

What camera should I buy?

“Say, could you recommend what camera I should get?” I get asked this question about once a week. Picking a camera is kinda like figuring out what kind of car to buy (which, if you ask, is a Toyota Camry in Sand – don’t ask why) There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution that works for everyone. One person may prefer a camera that is small and fits in your pocket, other may value a high powered zoom over portability. So rather than try recommend a particular camera, here’s a look at what I typically use…

For more planned photo outings, I usually take along my DSLR. Recently I upgraded to the 5D Mark III which, when paired with a 50mm lens, is actually quite portable.

The 50mm lives on the 5D most of the time and offers the best all around lens for my shooting style. Below is a shot with this setup from last weekend’s wedding.

For times when I don’t need or want to carry around a full rig, I turn to my trusty GF1. The GF1 is a micro four-thirds format camera and without getting into too much into the technical detail about, it takes near DSLR quality images in a much more compact form. Paired with a 20mm 1.7 lens it makes for a light and compact setup that is great for covering trade shows or shooting from this hip. While not entirely pocketable, it is small enough to sneak into venues where security may give you a hard time with a DSLR.

Sunset somewhere off the coast of Alaska.

I’m not a big fan of pocket zoom cameras, but when I do need to zoom in on something I turn to a Powershot 230HS which Lily keeps in her purse. Unlike most point and shoots, this one actually has manual controls so you can squeeze every last bit of image quality out of a small camera. Probably the biggest selling point of the 230HS is that it has a 14X optical zoom which works out to about 392mm equivalent.

How objects look fully zoomed out and fully zoomed it. The 14X zoom on this camera is pretty amazing. All in a package that fits in your back pocket. We used it at a Taylor Swift concert and were able to zoom in really close to her despite our less than ideal seats.

No matter how fancy a camera there is, the best camera is the one that’s with you when you need it. Something that’s there when the moment happens. For most of us, that would be a camera phone. In the past I would carry a Canon S90 for the pocket ability and quality, but with the iPhone 4S you get the best of both worlds. Some tech journalist scoffed at the “minor” upgrade the 4s was from the 4, but it is consistently ranked as the best camera phone out there and even outperforms compact point and shoots costing many times more.

Sunset against a passing freight train during an evening bike ride.

Besides the portability, I also love how quickly it’s ready to take pictures. I can have my phone out of my pocket and shooting in less than 2 seconds. All in the small package that is light, easy to carry and has great image quality.

So while using a camera phone as your only camera may not be for everyone, definitely take a look at what’s available the next time your phone is due for an upgrade. It may be worth considering ditching your old point and shoot for a higher end camera phone and having less devices to carry in your purse/pocket. Happy Wednesday!

Audrey’s Pink Lemonade Party

What a better way to celebrate a birthday than with pink lemonade? For the past few weeks, my house has been a storehouse of everything and anything that is yellow and pink. With some ribbon, and several bags of hot glue, Lily pieced it all together a birthday bash for our little princess!

Personalized lemonade bottles for Audrey’s buddies.

We also had caricature artist Ben Sam stop by to draw pictures of all the kids.

Audrey was all smiles for her portrait =)

After lunch, we had some delicious cupcakes made by our good friend Nancy, along with a healthy fruit platter.

Getting a little help with the candles

Happy Birthday Audrey!

Venue: Sycamore Canyon Park
